Eternal Rewards…They’re Worth It!

The joy of obedience will far outweigh the temporary pleasure of sin. How can we get that through our thick skulls?! Jessica gives us three reminders as to how we can grab hold of eternal treasures.

Scripture

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

1 Timothy 6:12

Reflect

God’s given me so much for which to be thankful! I’ve got a pretty great life. That said, there still are days that this life is hard and I’m thankful it’s short and eternity in Paradise with Jesus is LONG! Sometimes it’s tough to remember the joy of our obedience this side of heaven will far outweigh the temporary pleasure of sin.

Here are a few specifics from scripture on how we can encourage one another to choose obedience, because it’s worth it!

  1. TALK about heaven in everyday discussion– “…thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:19 If we talked more about who we actually are and the length of our days on earth compared to the glory of eternity with our Father, I’m convinced our behavior would change drastically. What a perspective change it will be for them to realize that the things of this world are not even meant to satisfy.
  2. FIGHT – “Fight the good fight of faith…” 1 Timothy 6:12. Scripture is clear that this life of faith is a fight! It’s proactive…we’re commanded to flee from the temptation of this world. Talk to your kids about how you’re fighting for righteousness. Let them know that sin does not ultimately satisfy, so we must fight it. Unfortunately, trusting Christ with our lives doesn’t make the rest of our lives simple. But what it does…is give us a companion, the Holy Spirit. Giving our hearts to Jesus means that this fight is already won. So fight hard, but worry not…for the victory is ours!
  3. PURSUE – “Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.” 1 Timothy 6:11 As we walk closer with Jesus, we will begin to see obvious choices to pursue what is righteous. Once again, this is a proactive calling. 1 Timothy 6:18 says, “They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.” How can you pursue righteousness as a family? What does it look like to teach your kids the discipline of steadfastness? We can rest in the fact that, as we become more familiar with the voice of the Spirit within us, pursuing steady, gentle faith will become more natural.

Sometimes obedience is tough, but scripture is clear that this world is not our home. There’s joy in knowing that we have purpose this side of heaven and walking in obedience to God’s call will outweigh the pleasures of sin.
