When our college staff was asked something they wish their parents taught them growing up, defending their faith\u2026knowing the \u201cwhy\u201d to what they believe as Christ followers was among the top responses! Walt gives us a boost of confidence through \u201chow to\u201d and resources as we parents aim to help our kids do just that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 Peter 3:15<\/a><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Reflect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201capologetics<\/a>\u201d comes from the Greek word \u201capologia<\/em>,\u201d which means \u201cto make a defense.\u201d When we use this term in a Christian context it involves learning to defend our faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But practically how do we do that as a parent? First, we have an active faith and a willingness to defend it. It is hard to teach someone else until we have learned it ourselves\u2026this includes passing things along to our kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s remember, this generation wants to know the \u201cwhy\u201d to most things in life!  We can help them with why we believe following Jesus Christ is the way to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents, consider digging into an online resource where you can learn at your own pace. I suggest utilizing Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry<\/a> (CARM<\/a>). CARM provides opportunities to learn\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Theology<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Apologetics<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Critical Thinking<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    \u2026in a safe setting. Explore the various offerings like: \u201cNew Articles<\/a>\u201d and \u201cBible Difficulties<\/a>\u201d. This site is one older children (high school and beyond) will benefit from as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Research together with your child. Have a dialogue with your child where you discuss the issues which arise. No need to fear questions they may have.  Don\u2019t be afraid to say, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d But, then be ready to accept the challenge of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Consider \u201cCase Maker\u2019s Academy<\/a>\u201d arising from Cold Case Christianity by J. Warner Wallace<\/a>. Begin to develop resources in your home which you refer to regularly when you have questions about your faith. For Theology I recommend Charles Ryrie\u2019s Basic Theology<\/a>which fe<\/em>atures helpful charts, a Scripture and subject index, and definitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Christian apologetics is something every true believer should be involved in even if it starts a little slowly. Greater capacity is built over time. Confidently defending our faith with gentleness and reverence communicates to those around us that our faith is important to us<\/p>\n\n\n\n
