{"id":1304,"date":"2017-07-05T14:25:14","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T14:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gator3012.temp.domains\/~wearebul\/?p=1304"},"modified":"2023-07-05T14:25:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T14:25:27","slug":"being-in-the-world-not-of-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gator3012.temp.domains\/~wearebul\/2017\/07\/05\/being-in-the-world-not-of-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Being In the World, Not of It"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take an assessment of our culture today\u2026turn on the news, sign on to Facebook, listen to your friends\u2019 and neighbors\u2019 conversations; we are bombarded by a world with issues and ideas often running counter-culture to our Christian faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scripture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Do not conform\u00a0to the pattern of this world,\u00a0but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.\u00a0Then you will be able to test and approve what God\u2019s will is\u2014his good, pleasing\u00a0and perfect will.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>Romans 12:2<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be human is to face an inundation of ideas, issues, obstacles, claims, truths, and lies. We build our lives, relationships, and families in the midst of this all while learning to navigate the bumps and pitfalls along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is a Christian to do with this? How are we to train up our children regarding this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let\u2019s start at the beginning \u2013 before our sin problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a look at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+1%3A26-28&amp;version=NIV\">Genesis 1:26-28<\/a>. In these few verses, we find our whole identity as people! We are HIS image-bearers. The pinnacle of God\u2019s creation. Made and called to \u201chave dominion (verse 26)\u201d and to \u201cfill the earth and subdue it (verse 28).\u201d Culture is not inherently bad; in fact, it was part of God\u2019s plan from the beginning. God intended for man-kind to \u201ccultivate\u201d (nurture, support) the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We are living in the middle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s a book many of you probably have,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jesus-Storybook-Bible-Every-Whispers\/dp\/0310708257\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1510847799&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=jesus+storybook+bible+by+sally+lloyd+jones\">the Jesus Storybook Bible<\/a>, where Sally Lloyd Jones says, \u201cNo, the Bible isn\u2019t a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story \u2026 the best thing about this Story is \u2013 it\u2019s true.\u201d It\u2019s God\u2019s Story, and it accurately describes reality, what went wrong, what God has done to redeem the situation (<em>Jesus Christ)&nbsp;<\/em>and how the Story will conclude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within Scripture we find Truth \u2013 with a capital T. And in our post-modern age where the common belief is that culture shapes our individual truth, it\u2019s important to distinguish Scripture as&nbsp;<em>objective Truth.<\/em>&nbsp;So while culture is never fixed, shifting and changing with the ebbs and flows of ideas, the Bible, and our God, is constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are a plot point, which means the only way to make sense of our culture is to view it in light of the bigger Story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How the story ends:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And he who was seated on the throne said, \u201cBehold, I am making all things new.\u201d Also he said, \u201cWrite this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>(Revelation 21:5)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make no mistake \u2013 God is at work today through His people, His image-bearers. Tune your heart to see the ways He is at work around you and be encouraged \u2013 He uses people to feed the hungry, adopt orphans, care for the sick, create brilliant art, transform nations, and restore culture \u2026 and in places like New Braunfels, Texas, He uses a fun, safe, wildly enthusiastic camp environment to reveal a little more of who He is and teach us how to love Him and love others well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s be agents of restoration, God\u2019s image bearers, with our identities set in Jesus Christ, not shifting to and fro with the waves of culture. Have a great conversation around the dinner table tonight talking about how your family can be agents of restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camper Corner<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Truth will you stand on this week to be a part of restoring our culture?\u00a0 That might look like you NOT joining in unhealthy behavior, or speaking up in a conversation where a worldly opinion is being presented as \u201ctruth\u201d. You can do it!
