If we can\u2019t learn how to be joyful and content when the wi-fi is down, how will I experience joy and contentment in the midst of stuff that actually matters?? Sean Hill points us<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scripture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c\u2026I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.\u00a0 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.\u00a0 I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><em>Philippians 4:11-12<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live in a culture where so much of our lives is concerned with the&nbsp;<em>right now<\/em>.&nbsp; I\u2019ll be honest\u2026personally, the things I want, I want now, if not yesterday.&nbsp; And it seems when I do get something I want \u2013 recognition, a gift, whatever \u2013 it never seems to be enough.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Philippians+4&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Philippians 4<\/a>, Paul, a man familiar with all kinds of hardships (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Corinthians+11%3A16-33&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Corinthians 11:16-33<\/a>), explains he has learned the secret to contentment in all situations.&nbsp; What is this secret?&nbsp; He tells us in Philippians 4:13 \u2013 \u201cI can do everything through him who gives me strength.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now often times we see this verse and misinterpret it to mean some kind of Christian version of the song \u201cI Believe I Can Fly\u201d from Space Jam.&nbsp; In truth, it more so refers to the idea of \u201cI can&nbsp;<em>endure<\/em>&nbsp;all things.\u201d&nbsp; See also: \u201cwithstand\u201d, \u201cbear\u201d, etc. in any season of life if Jesus is our strength and our foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we all wrestle with this how can we help our kids learn to be joyful and content, \u201cwhether living in plenty or in want\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Communicate.<\/strong>&nbsp; Talk about the importance of being joyful and content.&nbsp; Parents, use your own experiences: give examples of things in your life you\u2019ve desperately wanted and gotten.&nbsp; Did they completely satisfy you, or never leaving you wanting again?&nbsp; If you didn\u2019t get them, how did you respond and deal with it?&nbsp; Ask them about their experiences.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultivate.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;Work to cultivate a level of trust in your family (this is everyone\u2019s job, not just parents).&nbsp; Parents, strive for a relationship where your kids might be able to say, \u201cI know I can trust Daddy\u201d or, \u201cI believe Mom wants the best for me\u201d.&nbsp; Let that mirror your relationship with God and flow into a trust in God as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>\u201cIf you\u2026know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!\u201d (Matthew 7:11)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Serve People.<\/strong>&nbsp; One of the best things we do in our junior high ministry is called \u201cDallas Experience\u201d. We take our students to inner-city Dallas for a week and let them serve and share Truth with others.&nbsp; Serve together as a family\u2026just start in your own backyard \u2013 it probably won\u2019t take long before you find someone in more dire straits than you.&nbsp; If you\u2019re like me, you might tend to see the world as one movie where you\u2019re the main character and everyone else is just in a supporting role.&nbsp; There\u2019s no better way to see the error in that than when you\u2019re serving others!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Camper Corner<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What does it mean to you to be joyful and content?&nbsp; How is joy different than happiness?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can your family do to develop more contentment and trust in Christ?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just like Steph Curry makes tens of thousands of 3-pointers in practice before he makes them in a game, winning the battle of contentment takes practice.
